Sulfonamides are the derivatives of para amino benzene sulfonamide also known as sulfanilamide. The sulfonamide drugs were the first effective chemotherapeutic agents, to be employed systemically, for the prevention and treatment of bacterial infections, in humans.

Sulfonamides can be classified in various ways:
On the basis of duration of action
• Short acting (4-8hr)
• Intermediate acting (10-24hr)
• Long acting (up to 7 days)
On the basis of the site of action
• Sulfonamides for general infections
• Sulfonamides for urinary tract infections
• Sulfonamides for intestinal infections
• Sulfonamides for local infections
