The Count of Monte Cristo is SO GOOD. His time in prison is actually one of my favorite parts of the whole novel. Quite a bit of the length is because of historical context that’s written in there. Honestly, if the length is all that’s keeping you away from these classics, just find a really really good abridged edition. It’s an unpopular opinion but I think that if it gets more people to read it then it’s totally worth it. You’ve got it, girl!

The Way of Kings does feel intimidating at first! I found that once it got going I was really hooked, and I flew through it faster than some of my 400- and 500-page books!

The book I was intimidating in my TBR was one hundred years of solitude and I kill it in January 💃

I need to continue reading Monte Cristo but I love what I have read. Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell is another I need to continue. I enjoyed Nevernight, but it does have odd metaphors. I want to read Warbreaker before I go back to The Way of the Kings.

I totally understand the intimidation factor of these books. The Way of Kings is one that I have been putting off as well. I have had it on my TBR since 2013. I am reading The Count of Monte Cristo right now. It is seriously huge. I absolutely love the story leading up to the revenge. It is such an entertaining read. I am 900 pages into it now, and he is still weaving the webs of revenge. I think you will really like it.

I have been on a Sanderson binge all year. I think i'm going to tackle Way of Kings in May. Count of Monte Cristo is amazing, I need to reread it some time soon!

I've read an abbridged version of Moby Dick - according to my mom, the actual book is very bogged down in technical details and minuata, so she only ever gave me a short version.

Haven't read any of the others, though I do want to read CoMC, as Dumas is a good author.

I'm trying to read a book now that I wouldn't normally attempt. I'm finding it slow going though.

The Count of Monte Cristo is wonderful! The prison section is interesting but it a very small part of the story. If you ever want to buddy read it, I am also down for a reread!

Moby Dick and The Count of Monte Cristo have both been on my TBR for ages and I have been putting off reading them for the same reason you mention. I am not convinced I will like them but maybe I will be surprised!

I 💗 the challenge of reading thick books. 📚
I don't mind the duration that it will take me to read a book. I admit I am a supah slow reader. 📖😂

I'm also v intimidated by Nevernight bc of all those footnotes lol I might h8 that???? Also, I HIGHLY recommend reading Vengeful ASAP bc I actually loved it more than Vicious! I ADORED the new characters that were introduced in it.

I hadn't hear of Mr. Norrell before, but it sounds interesting.

i personally really enjoyed vicious, to the point of considering it my new favorite book. vengeful was really just as good as vicious! it’s true that i didn’t like it as much as vicious, but it still had things to add to the original plot and i found it just as page-turning 🥴

what are the things you didn’t like about vicious?

I've never read anything by Brandon Sanderson but I want to get into his book since he's such a popular and prolific fantasy author and I love fantasy. I've also been curious about the Count of Monte Cristo but its lenght is a bit intimidating.
