The fact that some people on the comments can’t understand the difference between East Germany and the German Reich is astounding, baffling, and extremely disappointing. Thank you for doing the work our education system has failed to do, even if *some* people can’t seem to get it.

East Germany was the closest thing to a success story in the Warsaw Pact.

Every history guy that sees this will have that cartoon heart bump in their chest and jaw drop with the "awooga horn" play in the background.

True, I remember as a 16 year old traveling through East Germany in 1981 going to visit relatives in Poland. Seeing the Grenzer DDR Border Guards, one officer in the East Berlin Hauptbahnhof wore the old closed collar pre 1974 uniform, it looked very similar to the Wehrmacht's uniform.

That train ride trip through Middle Germany, what became known as East Germany was a memory of a lifetime.

It is always fascinating to se ehow different nations will try to solidfy their claim as the rightful one whether or not its recognized, usually it being absolute dominance of a region to where no one can claim otherwise but since the coldwar was the start of a new era... things like this became way more common

Found it very likeable and keen to know more about east Germany. I went on holiday and stayed on that side for a week. Love it. I too love the Cold War history and have a modern german tank uniform myself.

Also the east kept the name „Reichsbahn“ for their national railway company. Reichsbahn was the name of the national railway company of the third reich! East Germany did this because they wanted to get access on the financial and material reserves of the WW2 era company!

Also interesting: West Berlin was not only divided in the middle trough the wall, it was also surrounded by the wall because it was a western island in the middle of a communist country and only accessible trough special guarded highways, railways and via plane from the west! Berlin also uses a metro ring system, so that subways from the west crossed the border to the east but were not allowed to stop in the eastern stations, so you had a lot of ghost stations in the east from WW2 era guarded by East German border guards. This is also portrayed in Black Ops Cold War!

@offizieramira you have the makings of a fantastic presentation on East German uniforms. You really know your stuff 😁

I mean they already had the uniforms

It kinda makes sense they’d work with what they already have to make something new, especially since after the war….well

Germany wasn’t exactly in a great economic place even before they lost; so they had to make due but damn did they ever

It is important to educate people about the historical background of the DDR. Many people have forgotten what happened back then.

Spoke to some East & West German reenactors and they told me that some in the top echelons of the Red Army still held suspicion about the East Germans, and viewed them as cannon fodder

The East Germans couldn’t afford make up. Trust me. I went there when the wall came down. It was like going back 30 years. The trains were packed going to Frankfurt and most of the ones I talked to wanted to get a pair of Levi’s

Of course they would twist the facts, Germany was fighting communism.

East germany was the USSRs biggest military base. In the 1980s they had 7000 of their 40000 tanks. And the ones in germany were the most modern
