slightly tangential, but I love how mass effect always has a mix of recognisable and far out tech in its environments. There's futuristic diagnostic and surgery robotics in the back, and then on Mordin's bench there's a sink and an enclosed precision scale, like a modern lab.

Practically speaking, if he wants to avoid injury, the best option is to let EDI ride cowgirl and let her control movement, though hands can certainly do some wandering. I'm sure she has enough fine motor control to avoid injuring him; she doesn't have to slam down or anything, however popular that is in certain media.
