Schlage Camelot Touchscreen Deadbolt Review and Install

DIY PETE reviews and installs the Schlage Camelot touchscreen electronic deadbolt. Electronic door locks offer homeowners convenience and added safety.

Using a smart phone to control the lock was intriguing to me. However, I learned that many locks use bluetooth technology which drains battery power on smartphones. It also requires you to have a phone with you to open the door unless you have the actual door key.

The Schlage Camelot has a built in touchscreen which means you don’t need to carry your smartphone or have a key. I go for a run every morning and like to go without a key or a cell phone. This makes typing in a code a great feature. The lock is powered by 4 AA batteries which will last for about a year. If the lock ever does go dead prior to adding new batteries, you can use a normal key as backup.

Convenience
Besides not ever having to carry a key, I also have the ability to program up to 30 codes into the lock at a time. They can be changed easily and deleted so I can give temporary codes out to a repair person, cleaner, or dog sitter. The keypad lights up at night and is easy to open if you get home late and forgot to leave on the porch lights.

Conclusion
All in all, I’ve had the Schlage Camelot electronic door lock for 3 months now and have decided that I’ll never own a home without a keypad. The keypad is super convenient and Schlage hit a home run when they designed this lock. I’d highly recommend this lock to anyone looking for an electronic or touchpad deadbolt.

Question..I've become so confused with the handing of the lock...Pictures online on Home Depot & Amazon don't match the description vs. Schlage's explanation of how to identify which one to buy. I see that your hinges are on the right side of the door when outside...and left side when standing inside...Did you buy the right handed or left handed version of the lock and matching handle set?

Why does my Schlage castle work the other way round? After pressing "SCHLAGE" it opens, and after pressing the code, it closes?

This is a great video. I want to know how does one open the door from the inside. Does it have an unlock button, or do you have to turn the handle? Can this lock auto-lock after closing the door?

Quick and probably a stupid question but I couldn't find this anywhere, what's the dimension (specifically thickness) of the internal device? Reason I ask, I have double door and want to make sure that it fits in between both the doors. What's the minimum thickness of the door that's required to fit this in?

need some help.  I recently bought this lock and am having difficulty installing.  The thumb turn doesn't make a full 360 degree turn.  The install the middle connector piece has to be in a horizontal position.  I can turn the deadbolt when I attach the front touchscreen part with the key no problem.  However to attach the back piece (inside of door when thumb turn resides) the thumb turn has to be in only one specific position.  This position doesn't allow the thumb turn to rotate enough to extend the deadbold once installed.  Could it be this only fits left hand doors?  I see you install yours on a right hand door and am hoping that you can help me!!

I noticed you have a small glass window pane on the door right next to the lock. Wouldn't this be better suited for a keyed (interior & exterior) deadbolt type lock? or is this available with an interior keypad as well? I know your video was geared more to the convenience aspect of the lock, but I'm thinking safety.

What is the cost for the paid subscription? Do you have it? If so, what is your opinion on it?

I know this has been posted for over two years now but what size drill bit did you use to bore the hole to screw in the bottom of the handset?
