This is one of the very few movies I'd love to see get the "special edition" treatment with all the CGI remade to more modern standards. It's a great movie but the cgi while good for the time lacks a lot of details.

Here's a awesome geek out, the gunstar itself.
1) you can clearly see why the kodan and well everybody else was terrified of the gunstars.! Imagine the whole squadron coming in!
2) one of the neatest, the design of the gunstar actually makes a lot of sense if you were trying to actually make it in real life.
Fast, extremely rugged and beyond heavily armed. It was however about as maneuverable as a dead pig....which again makes sense. Thats a huge amount of mass to move and also counter inertia when needed. This wasnt really a weakness, but a design compromise. You cant have it all, the reason its not really a weakness is it doesnt have to be. There isnt an angle you can attack where you arent in the firing arc of at least 2 turrets. People dont give much thought to how much a turret increases firepower. Another neat point are the engines, notice how the flame looked slightly canted out? Even looking close you could see the thusters weren't straight. This is actually a good idea as it insures you make the most of your thrust while maintaining control under hard b acceleration. There is however a serious flaw, they clearly are very expensive and difficult to build a elite super equipped and trained force with the tradeoff you cant field many vs the kodan swarms. A weakness the kodan exploited perfectly. Quoting Malari "your ships are very impressive in space...but right now they arent!" Followed by the boom! They pulled a pearl harbor except they took out the carriers(so to speak) the loss of just 1 gunstar is devastating....the whole squadron? . Sorry for the geek out, i hadnt thought about this movie almost 30 years and jave been watching clips all night
