How Disney Mishandled the Muppets

MuppetVision 3D is a great attraction and in fact, one of the best in Hollywood Studios. It's a classic attraction that's from the long gone era of Disney MGM, but with Monsters Inc. and a Monstropolis land coming to the park, is it really necessary to remove a show that is so well regarded? Today, I didn't just want to talk about MuppetVision 3D but also other Muppets attractions in the Disney parks, chronicling the disappointing history of this franchise and how Disney has continued to squander so much potential.

Just wanted to mention that in the Muppet Stage Show That it was actually Floyd Pepper who comes out and explains about the amps etc. Not Dr. Teeth.
Just to give clarification for that.

Someone pointed out once that Disney is really throwing away a great opportunity by remaking all of their movies in live-action when they could be remaking their movies as Muppet movies.

Disney constantly talks a big game about “leveraging intellectual property” but they continually neglect or outright botch every franchise they own

Man I wish they actually made the full muppet land. Instead we get the destruction of Jim Henson's last project.

I was sweetums back in 2008-2010. Ahh the fun days. He’s a crazy character but lots of fun. Lots of down times. Many 3-4 min naps and there was usually 2-4 sweetums in a day depending on hours and business of park. He was a great leg and cardio workout. Gonna miss this. Bunny? Bunny ran away!!!

Frank Oz was right The Disney Muppets are not the Muppets anymore.

There's a portrait of Jim Henson as a Muppet in the rafters of the pre-show area - it's hung a couple feet higher than the other props, a little off the left-hand wall, between the 2nd and 3rd row of pre-show screens. It's a touching tribute, and I really hope it makes it over to the Rock'n'Roller Coaster retheme.

The Muppets as a concept are such an evergreen concept that it’s astounding to me how little Disney wants to do with them. Seeing kids today having no idea who they are breaks my heart. There’s an endless well of projects they could do with the Muppets and instead it’s just… nothing.

I will never understand why Disney will have parks with a limited amount of rides (Animal Kingdom and Hollywood Studios), and instead of expanding or adding more attractions, they just replace popular attractions (Dinosaur and Muppets 3D).

When freaking FAMILY GUY has shown the Muppets more love in recent years than Disney has, you know you’ve mismanaged a property to a terrifying degree of incompetence.

The fact that Disney just casually threw away Jim Henson’s final film is genuinely depressing. That alone proves to me they don’t care about The Muppets unless it involves wheeling them out to TGA every year.

I think what upsets me the most is the reason for the closure. “Not enough wait times.” A rides success cannot be measured on wait time. It’s a theater show, it should not have a weight time. The point of it is to take a large amount of people out of park circulation. This means less wait time for everything else. They are instead replacing this with a ride that is guaranteed to just increase wait times for everything.

Disney getting rid of Muppet-Vision 3D is one of the worst mistakes they will ever make

We could've had so many Muppet parodies of Disney movies by now, and they'd easily make a billion each.

I don't even have the Muppets as a favorite Disney property and I'm still aghast they'd remove this show because of the historical significance of it. This is actually my first time seeing it because I've never been to MGM/DHS and it's awesome how complex it is... it seems like they'd genuinely have to rebuild it elsewhere to be remotely the same. It makes me wish Jim had the same assurances Spielberg had for E.T. the ride staying put....

That’s a shame. My brother and I grew up on the muppets. When I was in a fraternity in college I got to assign pledge names one year. Everyone got a muppet name. Miss you Animal and Fozzy.

Under current leadership, I don’t believe Disney actually has any “untouchable classics.” 😡

It was sad to see how the Muppet-themed store gradually lost the Muppet merchandise as time went on. At first, I bought some Muppet-themed memorabilia there, like a shirt and some books. But over time, there was practically no Muppet items for sale in there.

it makes me so sad. muppetvision and the great movie ride were always my favourites when i went to disney and now they're both gone. also muppetvision has one of (if not) the last preserved bean bunnys in existence and i doubt they will take care of him. it breaks my heart. if i had the money, and if he were up for auction, i would buy him in a heartbeat! but i bet he will meet the same fate as his Christmas Carol counterpart :(
