Peter King - An Appreciation

From a concert for Peter King held at The Pizza Express, Soho, London on the 29th June 2015 two excerpts from one of the finest saxophonists of our time.

R.I.P Pete - You've been one of my saxophone idols since I don't know when and will remain so!

The first time I heard Peter King play was at the NAAFI in RAF Uxbridge in company with musicians from the Central Band and School of Music there. He was 17 years of age. In 1959, in company with a young Gordon Beck, Herbie Flowers on bass (then a Central Band airman), Gus Galbraith on trumpet, .when, in 1959, they played together at a pub, located at the Uxbridge end of Southall (Club Octave). I was hugely impressed then, and was at Ronnie Scott's club in November of that year, when Peter played on the opening night of Ronnie Scott's Gerard Street club. He was a very special jazz musician whom I miss very much.

I met Peter at a gig a few years before he passed. That night he said had a hernia and agonising toothache, yet he was still playing brilliantly. Lovely man and an absolute inspiration.

Thank you Peter, what an inspiration. I had the absolute privilege of working him on half a dozen occasions. He was very queit to start off but get him on Formula 1 or aerodynamics and he was away, what a star. I will miss you. R.I.P

Not bad considering he'd be around 74 years old when this was filmed - One of Britain's saxophone masters for sure along with Joe Harriott and Harold McNair and John Dankworth as alto players anyway!
