This makes me wonder if he tried to save her once before. Perhaps when they were younger. This could make sense as she calls him the boy savior in what sounds like a mocking tone and he seems like he had tried to save her befoe but failed. It would give more tension and depth tl why he believes actual powder is lost.

It's so sad. The two used to be so close but tragedy separated them. On the bridge was when they were together again, playing the game they used to play as kids and Ekko seeing a glimpse of his childhood friend still in there. I hope they reconcile in season two.
