How to Stitch a Text Block for Case Book Binding

UPDATE: Since uploading this video, I've learned more about bookbinding and realize this is NOT a kettle stitch. I'm self-taught and came up with this method years ago to make text blocks for case binding. It's actually a combination of stitches, but at the time, I didn't know what to call it. Apologies for the incorrect naming!

Thank you! Very clear indeed, and now I'm binding a collection of 90 poems I've learned by heart. Never too late, I'm 77.

Since I keep coming back to this video everytime I need to bookbind something, here are the timestamps:
1:45 Preparing the materials.
2:07 Estimating the amount of thread.
2:23 First signature.
3:50 The knot.
4:20 Second signature.
5:34 Rest of signatures.
6:59 Adding a new piece of thread.
7:48 Final knot.

Thank you so much for making these tutorials! You've helped me a lot over the years!

I’m doing this because I’m in quarantine and I don’t have a sketchbook so I have to make my own

For some reason after watching this video it's inspired me to write my own book, now I am at four chapters and 6, 591 words

Man this makes me want to make more books. It's been too long and I recently dug out a huge piece of book board that I didn't know I had. I think it's a sign!

Why am I here?
I wanna make a book of my fav fanfics and read it without the glaring of the phone screen.

It's been four years, and I still come back to this video for my bindings! It's so simple and classy. Thank you for this wonderful tutorial!

Unlike 1000's of other youtube videos, yours give clear and concise instructions for the projects. No shaky camera action, no clutter in the field of view, no irrelevant commentary. Best of all for me, your hands show that you really are a true craftsperson - no fancy nails!

For my fellow europeans: good measurements are 1, 5cm at the beginning and then 6 times 3cm until u end up with almost exactly 1, 5cm again at the end. (A5) I hope that was understandable, Im not good at explaining ^^°

Here’s a few additional tips:
- Use gridded paper to practice binding if you’re not ready to commit to your actual pages yet.
- If you don’t have beeswax you can run your thread through a tea light candle which will have a similar result.
- My grandmother taught me that in sewing you always tie three knots at the end of your thread to make sure it doesn’t slip through.

Tried this and it turned out quite good. But I also made quite a few mistakes. Here are those:

1) Use a paper clip to keep in place the different signatures in place or they will move.

2) Please watch the whole video before starting. Being the rushy girl I am, I just watched the beginning and thought I could do the rest myself. As a result, while looping the new signatures, I kept looping them through the thread of the first signature rather than the stich below it, which resulted in a not so good looking book. So, watch it the whole way through and then begin😂

Edit: also don't pull too hard on the thread, it'll rip through your signature 🤦😂

I'm making my third notebook to send to my friend and I wanted to say thanks for this clear tutorial, I managed to get it right the first time and if it weren't for such clear instructions, i don't think i would have managed without ending up frustrated.

Tried this today and I can't thank you enough for this wonderful tutorial. My journal looks just how I'd pictured it. I'm just so happy. No more buying journals. Plus I discovered that binding is just the most therapeutic activity I've ever come across!! Thank you so much! ❤️❤️

Thank you for repeating how to stitch behind the stitch seven times. I really needed to hear it several times since I’m a slow learner. The close ups did wonders too!

Thanks for watching my tutorial on kettle stitch binding! For those who are asking, the paper I'm using is 8.5x11" 70 lb. text in warm white made by International Paper (Accent Opaque Digital line). See description for more info & here's a video all about the paper I use for bookbinding -

Thank you. Im binding my first book and this is very clear and straightforward. I think I may have been a tad ambitious for my first attempt though. Im making a leather bound travelers journal with blank pages. Most I see have lined paper, bound in brown leather, but I draw a lot, so I wanted blank pages. Plus, I prefer black leather and I had some at home from other projects, I decided to make my own. I'm finding it rather fun though, so I might make for the tutorial!!

Hi Jennifer, thank you very much for teaching us how to sew a book. I've made 5 notebooks since 2017 using the method you taught in this video. It's super easy and works very well. ❤ Love from Brazil 🇧🇷
