Why do you think Cillian Murphy stands with his hands in his pockets in front of Prince Harry of the United Kingdom?
There is a historical event underlying Murphy's spiteful gaze.
In 1920, during Ireland's war of independence, the order was given in Cork City that "Men with their hands in their pockets will be shot." That's why the Irish don't like the British royal family. In this shot, Irish rugby player Ronan O'Gara showed the same attitude to the Queen and caused a crisis. This is how the Irish protest in a simple but very effective way in their encounters or dialogues with members of the Royal family.

to be fair, the british royal family can’t claim that keeping your hands in your pockets is rude when they’ve spent all of history with their hands in other peoples’ pockets…

Oscar Wilde once said; “The problem is the English can’t remember history, while the Irish can’t forget it.”

“And that’s why the Irish don’t like the royal family”

Yeah that and another 800 years of history

My grandmother was born in 1920 and she is still alive. People think it was a long time ago but it's not. There will always be someone who remembers.

That's the most respectful "middle finger" I've seen flung at someone in a long time.

That's not a protest. If he REFUSED to shake hand of a royal - THAT is a protest.

My bus driver, for most of my UK tour was Irish, and when asked about the Royal family, he didn’t have a lot of nice things to say, but he did say this “the kids seem nice” lol

I learned to do that from my Irish grandmother Dolores. She taught me to use that when I don't like someone and/or their actions. And to remember the reason I do it.

While in London on vacation in the late ‘90’s I had the pleasure of meeting Irish band The Cranberries’ lead singer Delores O’Reardon. I didn’t have anything for her to autograph on me so I handed her a 5 pound note, turned it face-down so she could sign it. She replied, “oh darling, I’m Irish” as she turned it face-up and signed her name over the queen’s face. They certainly never forget.

He shakes the hand in cursory respectful manner to honor the present, then pockets to honor his people's history. Nice.

As an Irish person, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that 800 years of oppression is way more of a problem than a single order by the British army. They were doing that shit for centuries.
