Saying prime lenses give a "shallower depth of field" is a bit of a misconception. Yes, they often have lower aperture values than zooms; but an F/2.8 zoom and F/2.8 prime at the same focal length will have the same depth of field. However, primes do have the advantage of being generally sharper.
