Behind the scenes: FRANCE 24 gains rare access to Ukraine-controlled Kursk region in Russia

Russia said on Wednesday it had captured two more villages in Ukraine and was attacking in the town of Vuhledar, a longtime Ukrainian stronghold. Those reported gains come despite a Ukrainian incursion into Russian soil, designed to divert Russian troops. The attack on the Kursk region is the first assault on Russian territory by a foreign army since World War II. FRANCE 24’s Senior Reporter Catherine Norris Trent was one of a small number of journalists recently able to travel to Kyiv-controlled parts of Kursk, embedded with the Ukrainian army. She describes the conditions under which she was able to film her report.

DPA (Defence Politics Asia) reckons that there are possibly 100, 000 NATO troops in the Kursk region which are now almost fully encircled. The Russians can bide their time as they know that this utterly disastrous and ill-thought out incursion will be to their advantage soon enough. Meanwhile, the Donbass front line is collapsing substantially faster than at any other time since the second phase of the war started in 2022 (the first phase of the war starting in 2014). Putin is a master tactician.

reality: The few remaining dirt roads along the fields to the north are under fire control of the Russian Armed Forces. The Ukrainians are now trapped in Ugledar. The 58th Brigade has lost its combat capability. The 72nd has suffered losses but is still fighting.
The Ukrainian Armed Forces have three options in the city:

1. Surrender with the hope of “extraction”.

2. Try to break through to Bogoyavlenka with heavy losses.

3. To die with meaningless glory

At this moment Russian army is holding around 1/4 of the city itself.

According to sources from the ground, there are pockets of resistance, but fewer. The majority of them have been annulled by the FABs and Solntsepeki.
There are many dead and wounded Ukrainian Armed Forces soldiers on the streets and in the houses. They are not being evacuated. There is no more interception evacuation from Ugledar. As well as rotations.
