Exc(-) condition. 1 3/16" width at nut.
Excellent maple back, sides, and neck. The A-5 was Bob Givens' top model from around 1970 to around 1986. Antiqued cream binding on top and back and around fingerboard. Nickel hardware including Schaller tuners and two-piece Loar-style tailpiece. Rosewood peghead overlay with elaborate floral inlay showing initial "RLG" in center of peghead. Flat ebony fingerboard with dot inlay. Two-piece ebony adjustable bridge. Beautiful sunburst finish. Some hand wear in back of neck in first position. Top of mandolin shows random dings and some wear on treble side at binding.
This special mandolin was brought to us by a customer who purchased it from the great mandolin maker Michael Heiden, who played it until he started making his own top-rated mandolins. Mr. Heiden used this particular Givens as an acoustic model to make his own A models which have become top quality instruments in their own right. While this instrument has a lot of player wear, it is fun to know who the player was, and that he used this mandolin to develop his own A design!
