Supernaut - I Like It Both Ways

Supernaut were an Australian glam/punk rock band from Perth, Australia formed in 1974 and disbanded in 1980.

Formed in 1974 in Perth, Western Australia, Supernaut (originally named Moby Dick) had a short but successful career which yielded two straight top twenty singles (including a number one hit) and gold album status for their self titled debut album.

Supernaut were quickly signed up by Rockin Rod Woods at Polydor after a recommendation from Ian "Molly" Meldrum (who produced their debut album) and burst on to the Australian charts with a number one hit in July, 1976 with "I Like It Both Ways". A follow up hit came in November, 1976 with "Too Hot To Touch", which reached number 19, from their self-titled album Supernaut. Woods from Polydor thought the band would have been huge in Europe and the UK.

In 1978 Supernaut relocated to Sydney and shortened their name, their hair and changed their attitude. They opted for punk/new wave garage style and became "The Nauts". They released an album (produced by Robie Porter) under that name in 1978. The album was widely acclaimed by critics but sales were not forthcoming and they disbanded in 1980.

I am so glad to have grown up through the 70’s and 80’s watching Countdown and listening to great music, I love revisiting old music videos just to escape modern reality for a while!

My parents hated this. So I played it all the time. Sometimes the B Side, but that was pushing my luck...

Who would have expected a song with these lyrics to not only have been broadcast by Countdown but to have also made it to #1 on the Top 40 charts nearly 40 years ago!!

70's glam rock always had a lot of sexual ambiguity about it. Just read David Bowie's and Lou Reed's comments at the time regarding their thoughts and attitudes to bi-sexuality.

I thought they moved to England & started Nauts! If they moved to Sydney, why isn't there any footage or photos commonly available? I love this band, both Supernaut & Nauts. FUCK! June 18! I'm there. THANKS, SUPERNAUT! Best band in the world, fuck all posers. Where's the CDs & records. (I mean, I've got 'em all, but a definitive CD re-release blockbuster is in order). GET STUFFED! SUPERNAUT!

I know what Johnny's doing - he's using a high pitched voice to attract women, and a low pitched voice to attract men.

it's a good song - lyrically it pushed the acceptable moral limits of the time. Production wise it's a song's timing is a bit all over the place. The fact that dispite the production's timing issues - the song still comes through strong is a testament to the strength of the song - particulary the lyric of the chorus, heavy riffs and big beat.

I remember they did a short gig at my High School (Dover Heights Boys) would have been 74-75, we weren't that impressed at the time as their wasn't much comparison to Sky Hooks at the time.

Seen them live several times, if I remember right it was one time in support of JPY & the other as the Headline act.
Put on a Great live show, very tight & lots of energy.
