Upgrade Icom 7610 to 7760? Plus 7700 Lineage and History

In this video I will go over the history of the Previous Icom IC-7700 series radios and then compare the Preliminary Icom Pre-Release information on the IC-7760 to the Current Icom 7610 specifications and go over the layout of these two radios I will then give my current thoughts on this new radio with the Icom IC-7610 in mind! Some questions I hope this video will answer: Should Icom 7610 owners upgrade to a 7760? Is the 7760 worth the possible $6,000+ price tag? What features are on the newly announced 7760 compared to the 7610 and vice versa?

Excellent review! I guess I'll wait for the next model. I'm still happy with my IC-756PRO3.

It would be great if this new radio caused a good price drop in the IC-7610.

The deal maker or breaker is if Icom used better ADC IC's than the 7610. It's been 9 years of improvements in available IC's...the FPGA too. IF they went to 18 bit or above ACD IC's and a much faster FPGA, then performance will rival the top dawgs. The rest of the ergonomics and user interface is totally better than the competition. The FT-101D series may beat ultimate selectivity numbers still, but the rest of their radio is a confusing nightmare to operate. SO many engineering mistakes. Sold my 7610... let's see what happens!

Great video, thanks for posting! I know it took a lot of time to make this video!

7760 you should be able to put the head unit back on the base of the radio that's ridiculous.

Thank you for the review. Best I’ve heard so far.

Will any of these radios run CW Skimmer? So kewl to decode the entire band for contesting. The Diversity, receive beam steering, and pre-distortion for transmit purity are really advanced stuff (I have an Anan 200 SDR) which these radios apparently do. For me, I'd rather a IC-7300 at $970 and add a $2K two el. cubical quad beam with as big of Sky Loop antenna you can manage. I had a 520 ft loop which was beyond great.. now can manage about twice that.

7 to $8000! Insane unless one has money to burn. Small market segment for little improvement in rcvr specs. My 7300 does everything I need..if I hear them I can work them

I'd like to see somebody compare the 7700 to the 7760.

My 7760 will be here

Thanks for this. I was kind of stuck between the two if I am being honest. My current QTH Antenna setup can't make use of 200w, nor do I see myself erecting a bigger antenna due to the HOA anytime soon. Now it's back to 7610 vs. TS-890s decision time. Operating with Two Receivers seems to be a game changer though.

Here is a valid question, me thinks: I just saw a 7700 on eBay for $2, 500. If you could have two 7700's, because the 7700 is a one receiver machine, for $5k, would you do that or stretch for the 7760?

I’ve owned a 7700 and now have a 7610. There is absolutely no relationship between the 7700 and anything modern today, to include the 7760. For ICOM to imply this is laughable. That radio was from an entirely different era, with a very poorly designed final amplifier that blew without notice from even the slightest amount of impedance mismatch with an antenna. It had only one receiver, and it wasn’t “the contester’s rig” by even a long shot. The only thing the 7700 and 7760 have in common are 200 watt outputs and a built-in AC power supply. Any other comparisons are ridiculous, and done by people who have no idea what they’re talking about.

I don't care no way I will pay 10 thousand dollars for any radio

Great stuff as always.

Side question for you, do you know if there’s a way to hear police radio traffic that has been blocked off for the public?

I used to have my scanner set perfectly till our local department went to a trunk system I believe and now I cannot hear anything.

I’m in Vegas.

Good job. Wow, no CW speed knob? Have to see how that is handled before I consider this radio.
