***NOTE: This movie was originally in Technicolor. The video and audio were denoised and then the video upscaled with AI.***
The movie is based on the true story of Clarence Day (essayist of 'The New Yorker') and his family in the 1880s.
His father is an ill-tempered stockbroker striving to make his family run like his business. His mother is the total opposite and ultimately the real head of the household. In a brief window of time, we follow the developments in the life of the family members, such as finding a new maid, a love interest for the oldest son Clarence Jr., a plan to make 'easy' money selling medicines and the importance of being baptized for some communities.
A wonderful snapshot of what life was like in the United States in the late 1800s with an all-star cast.
It was widely acclaimed by the critics, with one critic calling it "one of the finer examples of film making in Technicolor". It was also moderately succesful at the box-office.
Trivia
The play's last line "I'm going to be baptized, dammit!" had to be omitted due to the Motion Picture Production Code standards of the day.
Starring: William Powell, Irene Dunne, Elizabeth Taylor, Edmund Gwenn, ZaSu Pitts, Jimmy Lydon
