Snowshoe Tails & Bindings

Snowshoe shapes & bindings impact where snowshoes work best.

Two factors that influence how to choose snowshoes are the shape of the snowshoe's tail and the type of binding on the snowshoe. A rounded tail is the more traditional snowshoe shape and the shape offers great flotation and stability in deep snow. The other tail shape is the v-tail. The v-tail makes it easier to move and harder to step on your own snowshoe while walking. V-tail snowshoes are also great for running on snow.

Snowshoe bindings are either fixed or rotating. Fixed bindings keep the heel of the snowshoe attached to your foot and fixed bindings are often featured on recreational snowshoes. For backcountry applications, rotating bindings are a better choice. Rotating bindings allow for a more natural food motion while walking.

I bought a set of MSR's last year to make sure it did not snow much.  Now I'm getting ready to replace my winter snow tires to make sure it does not snow much this year :)
