Immediately Castlevania came to mind, Dracula's story in particular (just a bit different). I interpret it as the vampire being hunted down in his castle and he tells his wife to leave and save herself, so they say their goodbyes.

However, they actually capture her first, "your cries become the wind." Then he pleads for them to let her go but his "desperate plead is left unheard."

They then kill her in front of him, "then my contrived goodbye" signifying their goodbyes before were all for nothing, as it was unrealistic that any of them would be able to escape alive.

Aaaand I just broke my own heart.
