Someone should make a trick speedrun where all of the story based moons need to be obtained through some insane method like this, possibly excluding certain bosses where creativity may be limited due to the arena.

the right way to do that jump is by throwing cappy and holding Y, take damage in the lava and then bounce on cappy who is still in the air because you held Y.
