The Thiotrichales of the class Gammaproteobacteria in the phylum Pseudomonadota of the Bacteria contain a diverse range of chemolithoautotrophic species, that is to say obtaining their energy from chemical reactions such as sulfur oxidation, and their carbon from CO2, much like plants.
Dr Rich Boden will discuss some new insights into the lifestyles, habitats and adaptations in key Thiotrichales that allow them to thrive in the diverse ecosystems they inhabit, from deep-sea hydrothermal vents to the gills of Thyasira flexuosa Montagu and from hypersaline playas to sewage. There will also be some coverage of taxonomic lessons learned in the era of whole-genome taxonomy and systematics and systems we have developed using these model organisms.
Dr Rich Boden FLS is a Trustee and Council Member of the Linnean Society of London, Associate Professor of Microbial Taxonomy and Systematics at the University of Plymouth and Editor-in-Chief of FEMS Microbiology Letters. He leads a research group focused primarily on sulfur-and-metal oxidizing Bacteria and Archaea from a wide range of taxa and ecosystems and the biotechnological exploitation of them. Their work encompasses genomics, proteomics and molecular taxonomy alongside classical methods in growth physiology, microscopy, biochemistry and enzymology.

The Linnean Society works to inform, involve and inspire people of all ages about nature and its wider interactions through our collections, programmes and publications. Founded in 1788, the Society takes its name from the Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus (1707–1778).
