The Tower of London throughout History has a reputation for being one of the world's most notorious and brutal prison. It's an incredibly famous castle and fortress, and has been linked to some of History's most brutal events, torture and execution. It was the scene of Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard's brutal execution, and also many of the Tudor period's most famous were imprisoned here.

It was thought to be unescapable. It was thought that no-one would even escape the Tower of London. However there are a very few cases in History where the impossible was achieved. During the Tudor era, and the reign of Elizabeth I, religious persecution was rife. To be a Jesuit priest, or a strong Catholic could be incredibly dangerous. John Gerard was one of these priests, and he would find himself locked inside the Tower of London. Here he would be brutally tortured, being suspended in manacles for hours causing immense suffering.

However the weak and injured John Gerard would somehow come up with an incredibly unique plan to bust him and his friend out of the Tower. They would write secret messages using orange juice to arrange the plan to escape. This is the incredible story of John Gerard's amazing escape from the Tower of London.

When I was 5, I was playing with Legos. When Gerard's dad was 5, apparently he was involved in the planning of acts of high treason 😆

Thanks for the video! There are some things that were summarized incorrectly (for instance, he left England because he was told too; he was not afraid to be imprisoned again, or even killed), but I appreciate that most of it is true (I've read the autobiography of the Hunted Priest three times, amazing read!)
If you read the Latin text around the picture of John Gerard in the video however, it seems to be a different John Gerard, a botanist, it would seem, hence the flower he is holding. Also the contemporary description of JG by Topcliff doesn't quite match that picture of him in the video, and he had dark hair, so that's another clue.
It does help us to imagine what a gentleman of that time dressed like though!

Really great videos on this channel, but please note HM Tower of London is not and never has been, a prison. It is a Palace and Fortress, which explains how escape wasn’t too difficult!

All that myths?! Hooray for science.
Reciprocations of that = psychologically unhealthy.
Psychotherapy should be taught in schools.

I often wonder what would become of atheists back in these times given what they did to people that believed in the same god, Just in a different way.
