Straight men trying to be politically correct in front of an audience who wants them to be their characters.  In real life they are men who are comfortable with each other.  Peter is a dad whose use to hugging his kids before going to bed. He was tired and just goofed up but Kellan isn't offended because all of them do are close.  Of all of them I think Kellan is closest in personality to his character. Peter and Elizabeth have said they feel like parents to these kids.  Makes sense because they are parents and these young people are close to a generation apart from them. Peter never did look 23 as Carlisle was but it still worked.
