On this day in 2004, the first presidential election was held in Afghanistan. Nearly 8 million Afghans, including women, voted for the first time. Hamid Karzai was elected as president. Since the Taliban took over in 2021, elections are banned in the country. The Taliban calls them a "failed experiment".
