You can here the sirens in the background, the whole place is about to explode, but Eggman doesn’t care, he’s too obsessed with Sonic, he NEEDS to end him right then and there, I feel like the phantom ruby is slowly making him insane to the point where he’s willing to die just as long as sonic goes with him. This is the last straw, he’s snapped.

A lot of people are bringing up how this and certain preceding themes convey the sense that Eggman has gone truly insane in his pursuit of defeating Sonic, but I think it's worth discussing just why that may be the case. So, presuming Mania takes place in a branch timeline which splits off as a result of Generations' time travel plot, this Eggman has been confronted with the reality that if he continues on as he normally would, he'd have no chance of defeating Sonic, unlike his modern counterpart who can always cope with the belief that his next plan will surely be the one. So he's now aware he has to pull out all the stops should he ever hope to succeed, throwing away such inhibitions as common sense, self-preservation, and what little morals he may have in the process, and that's made him far more deranged and sinister, yet arguably little more than a hollow (egg)shell of his former self.

A gem that manipulates reality itself rests within the mad doctor's newest creation. All his plans laid to rubble: the death egg robot, the heavies, and even an upgraded metal copy of his nemesis. This had cracked his mind. He didn't care that his base of operation was overloading with the ruby's power. He didn't care that his lair would soon be reduced to scrap like his prior inventions. This, to him, was personal. If he could destroy his enemy, that would be victory to him, even if it cost him something he couldn't rebuild: his life. But even he didn't know a bigger fish existed. That gem he held belonged to something far greater, and it would want it back at any cost.

I love how the sirens becoming less prominent implies that *Egg* is tuning them out or ignoring them to focus on fighting Sonic but every now and then they come back to indicate that they occasionally come into his focus.
