Hayward 2-Speed Pump Install | Above Ground Pool | Intex Pump Replacement/Upgrade

In this video I replace my Intex pump with a Hayward pump. After 6 years the pump portion of my Intex pump and Sand Filter became unreliable, so I decided to replace the pump with a Hayward 2-speed pump. This new pump should last for many years.

Part of the goal of this project was to keep the Intex Sand Filter and integrate the new pump by modifying the platform that the old pump sat on. To create a sturdy base I cut a section of composite decking and attached it using hardware from the Intex pump base. This will keep the new Hayward pump off the ground and securely positioned. I also utilized a special adapter to allow me to use the existing Intex flexible hose (40mm fittings) connecting the pump output to the sand filter.

The end result is a pump that is significantly quieter and should last for many years to come. I like the ability to run the pump on the low setting to quietly cycle water through the filter and go to the high setting if I want to move more water or simultaneously run my fountain.

Featured parts list:
Hayward PowerFlo Matrix 2-speed pump

Another 2-speed pump option: Blue Wave 2-speed Pump

Hayward smooth connector

40mm to 1-1/2” conversion

Which pump did you get? My 16" intex cracked with the cold and they are not in stock. Looks like these may not have a timer but thats not a must have.

What did you do with the two holes that fed the pump after you installed the Hayward skimmer? Also, do you have a recommendation for blocking those holes off if I don’t want to use them for anything?

OK so I have the Hayward pump which is 1 HP speed pump that is supposed to be paired with the sand filter of 100 pounds now my Intex sand filter is a 77 pound Sand filter can I just change out the pumps like you did or do I need to also upgrade my 77lb sand filter? That makes sense

I assume that hose that goes between the pump and filter is an Intex product? I have a Hayward pump and sand filter. Do you know if that Intex hose would work between them? Keeping that thick hose I have now on with clamps, and getting it off for winter storage is a real PITA. Thanks for the great video.

Nice install and thanks for the video! Did your pump come with a bonding lug? I got a similar pump now installed and I'm seeing videos about bonding the pump and also around the pool with no.8 ground wire. This was for the more expensive permanent above ground pools though, not the intex style. I just plan on unplugging the pump when the pool is in use but any info would be appreciated.

How did you get the bolts out of the pump to remove it from the base? Mine have washers with grooves in the washer and they will not turn out.

What kind of flexible hose do you have attached to the bottom of the skimmer?

Is that a Intex sf10220 sand filter? Were you concerned about using a bigger pump than the standard Intex one? I'm looking at doing the same.
