Quantum Levitation Will Blow Your Mind

Quantum levitation is one of the coolest things in physics. It’s a process where we can use the properties of quantum physics to levitate superconductors over a magnetic source. Superconductors are materials whose electrical resistance drops to exactly zero below a critical temperature. This critical temperature is way below 0 degrees Celsius. An interesting thing about superconductors is that when they are placed in a magnetic field, they expel it. Unlike regular metallic conductors, they don’t allow magnetic field lines to pass through them. However, some field lines pass through the superconductor when impurities are present. So quantum mechanics enables magnetic spikes to penetrate and grab hold of it. Once the system is quantum mechanically locked, it can hover above a uniform magnetic field. That’s how quantum levitation works.

I wonder if we could match the harmonic level of the superconductor, could we make a truly gravity defying substance? Or possibly a sort of engine to match the harmonic?

This video will kill a physicist. "Quantum Mechanically locked" is just gobbledygook

imagine showing this shit to a farmer in the year 1389

I honestly think the most mind blowing thing to me is, it's the impurities that make quantum levitation work. Not just the magnet, not just the superconductors and the low temperature. The impurities are a critical part of the mechanism. That's cool

The reason is meissner effect.
When kept below certain temp it exhibits diamagnetism.

What's quantum about it, it seems like a phenomenon of electromagnetism

This is absolutely wrong and misleading. The reason is eddy current and the lenz's law.

This is the reason progress is stifled. This is not quantum levitation. It is plain magnetism, as you can readily witness.

Tempurature changes how molecular bonds form and change. If we cool matter the molicules bond together... if we heat gold it turns into white powder.. keep heating the gold and it becomes an invisable powder but its still there. Cool the powder and it becomes visable again.

From what I can tell: this is just a normal phenomenon (Lenz's law), wich is made special by superconductors.

Any conductive material, such as copper or steel, will create an current, wich makes opposing magnetic field if the outside magnetic field changes. Aka coils or solid blocks will try to resist changes in magnetic flux, by making their own counter-magnetic field. The lower the resistance, the higher the current, the stonger the 'locking together' is.

The special thing about superconductors however, is that they have *zero* electrical resistance. Therefore, their current, wich is induced by the magnet, can be huge with zero losses to heat. Allowing the superconductor to perfectly balance itself to the magnet. Note: it is jot just levitation, the superconductor straight up get 'locked' relative to the magnet.

As example: dropping a magnet though a copper tube, will slow it down, but not stop it. If you could (somehow) drop a magnet through a superconducting tube, it would literaly stay put. It wouldn't make it through.

So would the vast coldness of space be Cold enough to allow this type of behavior to occur? Especially if we are dealing with such low gravity, since we show it works under much heavier gravity levels here on earth? There are very strong magnetic 🧲 fields in space 🌌 this might be possible for the right circumstances?

I suppose you are required to be this basic.
I think this does a disservice to interested young people who are interested in physics.

Since last i checked it was called magnetic levitation the word quantun doesn't refer to anything here

So….would the vacuum of space temperature be sufficient for something like that to be possible if say for example it was part of a space craft?

What if we had magnets with a let's say idk 5 magnetivity? I forgot the unit of measurement, so if we had a track made of such magnets and several 300 kg superconductors with a weight of another 1000 kg above them, would they still levitate and slide over the magnetic track? Considering there would be a way to keep them cool enough
