Anthony Burgess and Spanish flu

The 1918-20 influenza pandemic carried away Anthony Burgess's sister as well as his mother (whose pleonastic stage name was the Beautiful Belle Burgess). He writes in his autobiography: 'There was no doubt of the existence of a God: only the supreme being could contrive so brilliant an afterpiece to four years of unprecedented suffering and devastation.'
