Trump backs off threat to close U.S.-Mexico border

President Trump has brought immigration back to the forefront after threatening to close the southern border. Questions remain about the president's policy as he travels to the border town of Calexico, California. CBS News contributor and Republican strategist Leslie Sanchez and Vox senior correspondent Dara Lind joined CBSN to discuss.

It's not back off. Closing the border is the last thing he will do after exercising all options.He can put tariff on their cars and products. This kind of news nowadays is misleading.

I agree should not close border, but there is a major issue at the border right now and the media is ignoring it. We need to better fund the border to handle the doubling of people coming across.

Miss Anne-Marie Green. Don't you remember in school, when someone acted up in class and the whole class suffered the consequences? Well it's the same principle. More than 25%, or more, of these migrants are of the criminal element. Think about it this way. You have a teenage daughter. Your daughter has a boyfriend that is a troublemaker at school and has been in trouble with the law numerous times. You would want to everything in your power to keep your daughter away from that troublemaker/criminal? If you don't? Then your children should be taken away from you for not protecting your them. How would you feel if your daughter was raped and murdered by an illegal immigrant? You would want justice, right? What if it could have been prevented? Our immigration system is broken and has been for decades. So yes. I think the border should be shut down, maybe partially. Only to allow business visas only. But the port of entries are not the problem. It's the countryside that's the problem. Until congress fixes the broken system. Yes, I do believe more can be done for the families, women, and children the other 75%. There are many, abandoned military bases around this country that could be used to house these illegal immigrants. Or, build temporary camps on the Mexican side of the border. Instead of releasing these families, women, and children. Place them in one of these closed military bases to await trial. This way, immigration officers can weed out the criminals and the traffickers and deport them into their country's justice system.

That’s true. Both sides depend on trade.. we need to check the trucks closer, if they are using legal trade for illegal use. We need to get the wall up, take care of that problem and increase border check.In trucks shipments would be ideal. Because both sides are lazy. We need to provide jobs to load and unload for checks. I’m sure they can use dogs, and do I’m sure. But runners are smart, .im surprised they haven’t learn to mask the smell with another smell. If they can and do, the dogs cant do the job. So unload and check. It takes time, but that would be an incentive for transporters on both sides .
