I can attest to that thiy is accurate for an engineering job at Bosch. But there are other employers that do not care about the law as much.

35hour work week implies that Zach works in a company with IGM tariff. I do not think this is common elsewhere, but 40 is the legal maximum for a 5 day week.

It is illegal to work off the clock in the US.
I was pressured to reprimand one employee for working less than ten minutes without clicking in her time.

If you don't take leave our HR forces you to take it. People dissappear for 6 weeks sometimes just to use up some of their paid leave.

It also depends on employer to employer. Mine is a small engineering firm. We work under Deutschebahn projects. We have 40 hours working weeks. Deutschebahn employees doing the same projects have 38 hours working week. Over the course of a year that 100 working hours difference.

In Germany, you can go to jail if your employee works for more than 10 hours/day or 48 hours/week, and, for example has an accident on his way home because he was tired.

The US version: "I'm going to have to fire you because you only worked 60 hours last week, and actually had the nerve to ask for overtime for 5 of them. I also see that you used 2 of your 5 allowed personal leave days this year, which is completely unacceptable. It may have been for life-saving surgery, but that's just not something we can tolerate around here... Now, before you leave I want you to complete the monthly TPS reports for not just your own but also the other six departments as well - and if it's not on my desk by closing time you'll forfeit your severance pay. Have a nice day, ya'll."

Not so specific to Germany. The regulations on work are heavy in most Western European countries.
