Most people (93%) in the United States have at least one sign of metabolical illness, likely as a result of the Western diet.

Metabolic dysfunction is really mitochondria dysfunction, when our cells’ powerhouses have trouble converting food into energy.

How do you check if your mitochondria are dysfunctional? Get a fasting insulin level at your doctor’s office. If your mitochondria are healthy, your fasting insulin level will be low. This means you’re turning food into energy rather than storing it as fat.

However, you can also use your glucose levels as a proxy for determining if your mitochondria are working well.

Specifically, monitor your glucose response to food. For example, is your glucose spiking frequently or do you have gentle hills? The latter is preferable. Additionally, look at how long your glucose level stays elevated after a meal.

The spikes tell you about insulin release, whereas length tells you whether you are insulin resistant.

How do you monitor glucose? A continuous glucose monitor allows you to see your glucose in real time, over time.

I’m using a CGM. After fasting for 14 hours, my blood sugar is typically in the 80s. If I have a high stress event at work, my blood sugar can shoot up to 140. Stress is a huge factor on your blood sugar.

Yes, in the 1960s, we did not "eat between meals." This was considered something akin to immoral. You had to wait for the next meal. If you ate a snack, you would "spoil your dinner." We didn't even use the word "snack."

The proxy method works! I check few things when I see my BP going up. One of them is blood glucose. If it's greater than 80, it impacts my BP. Insulin issue is a big deal for high blood pressure.

Have a king breakfast, a soldier lunch and a begger dinner. The less i eat at dinner, the better i sleep, the better i sleep, the more the body rests and regenerate, physically and mentally.

The proxy is imperfect. Two people with the same glucose measurements can potentially have wildly different insulin levels to control that glucose. Right? And those two people can have wildly different states of metabolic health.

It would be great if we had not just a continuous glucose monitor but also a continuous insulin monitor.

The high stress life is the main cause. The grocery retailers offer mo healthy food. Produce is not fresh and full of pathogens and chemicals. Frozen foods full of chemicals and depleted of nutrients. Isles full of sugar laden stuff. I personally eat lean meats and salads from restaurant retailers. Only healthy foods from grocery retailers are eggs nuts and bananas. All I will eat from grocer retailers
