I feel like what he means by having Kiryu and Nishki being a new portrayal is despite having Yakuza Zero to work with when they made Kiwami, basically the entirety of Yakuza 1's tone and plot was untouched, which made it clash hard with giving Nishki way more in-between backstory every now and then to flesh out his heel turn, but that's not as weird as the whole Majima Everywhere thing clashing with him being a one-note psycho who gleefully kidnaps children in the main story.
This version I feel like won't be so constrained about being 1000% faithful to literally every cutscene from the original to its detriment. It'll recreate what it needs to while I think going "yeah Majima always acts like this" or "Nishki expresses his turn to Kiryu more" or things like that.
...What I'm saying is this series is gonna be what Kiwami might've wanted to go for in being a remake that kinda forgot it was a remake and not a port with new mocap.
