In seated forward bends there are 2 phases:
1) a phase of effortful extension, of attempting to elongate the spine while keeping the legs extended, vigorous, pinned down to earth.
2) But then there is a phase of total release where the entire spine drops down horizontally towards the ground from the pelvic base to the forehead and chin.

The closer proximity to the ground offered by seated forward bends can be healing and restorative. In energetic terms simply being near to the ground gives you energy and nourishment. If you observe your body internally you will come to understand how much the earth is feeding and sustaining the energy of the body. It is beneficial to think of seated forward bends as a repeated bowing to the earth, an entering into sacred communion with the ground, a discovery of the meditative power that comes from being strongly rooted to the ground.
