As a southerner who has studied the genre, I believe our own Capote monickered the observers of the world, the extreme realists who may create art akin to Southern Gothicism (indirectly) as "apart people". I must argue with you, however: these writers comment on the battle between the light and dark within all humanity, not just Southerners. It's very spiritualistic. Think of Gothic architecture. It is designed to bring your attention upward. It's about God, nature, the fall, and how we are all connected. This is at the centre of these works. I can't forgive such an omission. However, I am delighted to know our works are not ignored.

I just read Flannery O Connor’s Everything That Rises Must Converge and came to this video for better understanding of what I just finished. This is the most comprehensive video on gothic literature I’ve ever seen.

“Dally” I think maybe they didn’t all just dally about with the enslaved women. I think maybe there are other more appropriate terms.

Why are Zora Neale Hurston "Genius of the South" and Toni Morrison not included? They are my personal favorites, and arguably way more contemporary.

Thank you! My professor wanted us to write about two poems and whether or not they could be considered Southern Gothic but he forgot to give us information on what Southern Gothic is. This really helps me out on my paper!

Time isn’t a human construction, time simply is.

Great explanation, loved it. I think it covered every major characteristic of Southern Gothic. I am Latin American but many things about Southern Gothic feel extremely close to the XXI century reality of Latin America.

Time is not just a construction if it was we could define it. Its a dimension of reality we gave to better understand it.

It really was a shame that an entire civilization was wiped out just so the railroads could have land to run on. Lincoln was rich from working for the railroads. Wall Street took this country over in 1865 & look where we are now. It took the South 100 years to recover after the Civil War—so much for Progress.

They're were earlier gothic writers who were better than Poe IMO like George Washington Cable, Ambrose Bierce, and Nathaniel Hawthorne (minister's black veil)

Emmett Till and Mayella Ewell are not contrast of extreme differences as one is historical and the other a character in a story. The malas is more than noticeable and obliviously crass while lacking terseness to say two white women falsely accused two black guys of sexual assault because they were black guys. All the poor children.

Teachers were typically young women who hadn't married. Typically if they married they couldn't be a teacher anymore.
