Wow ! Sister Jean said that? But this is heart wrenching drama if there is one thing abstract, serial and all the other tendencies of  2oth century music  can do it  is express anguish, anxiety, neurosis, dementia, paranoid states . I think she wanted people to connect to the opera & story . But contemporary music does many other things but i for one am saddened by the popularity of minimalism and neo-romanticism -it's just giving non-thinking emotionalism what it wants . Brecht's credo is the better way to go. People won't think when it's made to easy for them ...and not show up or listen at all if it's too dificult . Maybe Heggie's is a solution too . but I would not Wozzeck, Lady Macbeth, Jenufa any other way. When people hear Alien or Pysho the music is so perfect they don't even realize its there they get the entire gesamstkunstwerk. Discomfort is what gives contemp film, art, architecture, poetry, painting its juice! Not shock but recognition of the discrepancy, fissure, irreconciliable space t between public accepted truth, ethics, morality and private often shared individual  experience . The shared outrage of the Holocaust survivor arrested in Ferguson is a testament to what we all share as human beings ! What kinds of music best express this ?
