It's time for another pickup truck! This time, Tiff, Paul and Ben take a look at the legendary Toyota Hilux!

Having sold over 19 million of the Hilux since they starting building it in 1968, and first sold in Britain in 1972, the Hilux is the most popular pickup truck in Europe! We let Ben 'clever cloggs' Collins take the reigns of the 8th generation Hilux, with a 3.5 tonne towing capacity.

The name Hilux is made up of a combination of high and luxury, of which it was in comparison to Toyota's other pickup at the time, the Stout. Powered by a 2.8L engine, the Hilux has a 0-62MPH time of 10.7 seconds, going onto a top speed of 109mph.

Built as a workhorse, the Hilux is just at home off the road as it is on building sites and it's clear that Toyota have built it to work in a rugged environment with an aggressive looking exterior and a hardwearing interior - built not to break! Certainly a thumbs up from the former stig!

I love my old 'lux. They're very popular here in Namibia and South Africa. Bullet proof reliability, tough as nails and cheap as chips to run.

I rented one to travel with my family (wife and three teenagers) in Cuzco, and it was awesome. Not as refined as even the Rav4 which had been my first option. It was even a "miner" model, as we call it here, with a full rollcage and roll bar. Still, on the tarmac it was 4th and 5th all the time and whwn we went off road to get away from the obvious tourist places it didn't even break a sweat. I was never woried about crossing a strem or really bad roads. Too much for the normal citylife, but it just never quits.

People forget not all cars nowadays are SUVs... some are actual off-roaders (and very capable ones like the Hylux). And yeah, these are made to be rugged so don't expect many "creature conforts". Honestly, I'm glad there still are vehicles like these that you can actually use and not just "pose" like all the SUV trash the automotive market has been plagued with for (too) long!

I remember Ben well. About seven years ago he was promoting his book and did a stand up session at Spa F1 camping. A great time.

After the show I we got to talk for about 20 minutes, a nice bloke. He also liked my idea about a 2nd Top Gear program, Extra Gear, where a young team will present in a different style to the famous Treo and maybe one day replace them…

Hilux’s are working hard everywhere here in New Zealand. They’re not considered as rough and tough as the 70 series LandCruiser options, but definitely much more luxurious 😬😆. Fab review 🙂

Needs to be white with a DShK or a ZPU mounted in the back, that’s a proper HiLux.

Out of all the Japanese pick-ups out there the new Mazda BT-50 is my favorite, but i do like the Hilux as well.

The most robust vehicle.
In my workplace forest timber, one of contractors hilux crash and plunge to cliff. Two days to get it out. Put it on workshop for a week in middle of dense forest inborneo and jobs done.
When driving all the emergency lights on, emergency dashboard says fuel problem, brake problem, and axel problem. Yet still capable driving 80kpj. Lol

I do wonder if the spec of these things is part of the myth. It's rugged so it will be ok with hard plastics and unrefined suspension, but in reality they just take a lot of the nice things out because, it makes Toyota a shedload of cash in the lower spec materials and not getting nice dampers for it.
