How We Make Our Irrigation Water Reservoirs

This video starts by discussing the benefits of irrigated farming and then looks back at Mondo Farms journey through using various types of irrigation water storage over the years.
Finally, we share a step by step look at how we constructed a large water reservoir at our new farm, Kimberley.

Some Frequently Asked Questions
What is the size of the pond liner?
We used HDPE 500 micron.

What is the source of the water for the reservoir?
When we created this video, we specifically avoided mention of water sources, in order to focus on
1) our reason for the large irrigation water storage vessel
2) the design of the water reservoir
3) the construction methodology.

These are things that a lot of places that need such a water reservoir would have in common, and sources of water will differ form case to case.

Can this reservoir be used to catch rainwater?
Not with the high embankment that we raised on the sides, which is specifically designed to avoid surface water and other debris from falling in. You could build a similar water reservoir without the embankment, or with some surface water channels to guide and bring water into it if necessary.

Three comments for you that spring from the desire to minimize evaporative loss. 1) The profile I see in your video is based on domestic water reservoirs. A favoriter project for civil engineers. How civil engineers work is they find a proven design over and over again regardless of a specific projects unique demands. We maintain that irrigation reservoirs should have a very different profile. Build your reservoirs as deep as you possibly can and no wider than is necessary to achieve your desired carrying capacity. The rule of thumb is deep and skinny is better than shallow and wide. 2) Always orient your reservoir so that the prevailing winds pass over the short axis of the reservoir. 3) Plant windbreak trees along the berm that the prevailing winds cross first. You will have the benefit of reduced wind passing over your reservoir and some of the reservoir will be cooled by the shade. I hope you find these tips from arid land farming to be beneficial to your operation. Best of luck!

Brilliant video. You never get to see the actual detail of how these processes and structures are built and having you lay it all out and show us the process is super valuable. Not to mention the wisdom around various farming trade-offs and realisations one comes to along the journey. Great stuff.
