Fire! "Hand guns are made for killin' \ They ain't no good for nothin' else." --These days it's hard to believe that Lynyrd Skynyrd opposed hand guns in a song back in 1975. Wikipedia explains the term: "The term 'Saturday night special' refers to cheap guns used in poor neighborhoods. ... Sometimes known as junk guns ... they were commonly referred to as suicide specials."

At 5:46 the lyric is dump all the people to the bottom of the sea. Basically people are the problem in the end

Guns in the wrong hands = bad.
Good song.

A Saturday night special is a name for a cheap throw away gun

Skynyrd had very definite attitudes about guns, they had little use for handguns but avid sportsmen and also did a song "God and Guns" that was pro-guns... at least for hunting rifles and shotguns. The "Saturday Night Special" was the nickname for a cheap small caliber handgun useless for target shooting, hunting or other uses and really only good for criminal use.

My favourite Skynyrd song. That riff is 🔥

A Saturday night special was any cheap handgun usually an import. So the thinking was if you ban the imports the violence would lessen because poorer people would not be able to afford them.

It was pretty well known to me at the time, even way over here in NZ, that this was not a song glorifying guns, it was a chilling criticism of the ready availability of cheap handguns to people who should not have them. I thought it was a bit edgy, but agreed with the sentiment.

On the album before this one they have a song named “Gimme Back My Bullets “. But that’s about the music industry ratings system.
People used to throw bullets on stage so they had to stop playing it live. ☹️

Hey man. When it comes to guns, just like anything else, speak your mind. As an American, I’m not gonna be offended by your opinion. I have my opinion, you have yours. No matter to me. I love your channel, bro!

Great southern rock band from the 60's-80's. It is very sad what happened to this band in losing so many members. My favorite songs are "Simple Man", "Free Bird" & "Sweet Home Alabama". They had lots of great songs such as "Call Me The Breeze", "Tuesday's Gone", "That Smell", "The Ballad Of Curtis Loew", "What's Your Name", "Gimme Three Steps" etc.

I grew up in the American South, and there was a time when it was pretty common, at least in the rural areas, to regard a handgun as a criminal's weapon. Now keep in mind these were folks that were otherwise pro gun all the way, but they made a distinction between rifles and shotguns (these were tools for hunting and defending your property/livestock/farm), and pistols, which they regarded as useless for anything other than killing another human being up close. Especially the smaller models (the "Saturday Night Special" here is referencing a small .38 caliber pistol that is cheap and easily concealed). When I was growing up practically every house had at least one shotgun and one rifle, but not many had a pistol. Of course things are quite different now.

You don't hear the term much anymore, but a "Saturday Night Special" was a cheap ass handgun. Would fall apart with any extended use. Ronnie mentioned you could buy one for $20. As a kid growing up in NYC in the 1970s, I remember people buying them for as little as $25 at the time. Most of them were sold used / black market. One would not go to a proper gun shop and buy one, dealers sold them on the streets, much like illegal drugs.
