Is it so much as a mode of inheritance as more of a consequence to an event? Like you said, if the normal alternating pattern is interrupted, they default to female. So if the amyloid structures weren't present, the cycle would continue as so. So, I think they should investigate exactly how the amyloid structures interfere with the cycle. Could there be a way in which the amyloid would interfere but result in all worms being males? Now that would be more suggestive of inheritance.

Is this seriously the first discovery of inheritance outside of genetics, surprising.
Epigenetics is at least an adjacent phenomenon. The study with flatworms was interesting.

Our academics seem to have forgotten about a previously understood and commonly observed form of heredity: mimesis

This is why children, by and large, speak the same languages as their parents, observe the same religions as their parents, organize their lifestyles the same as their parents, etc.

Obviously mimesis wouldn't account for congenital factors such as sex, eye color, etc.

But it absolutely does have immense impacts on behavioral "disorders" such as autism, ADHD, borderline personality and narcissistic personality disorders, sociopathy, etc.

These behaviors can even impact variances in nutrition and stress levels, which could then go on to impact later-life disorders like cancer, alzheimers, parkinsons, etc.

But alas, thanks to Edward Bernays, our society understands human behavior in the context of economic utility rather than personal health.
