Christmas in Iceland is a lovely season filled with activities for the entire family. We discuss Icelandic Christmas traditions such as Christmas markets, leaf bread, and the 13 Yule Lads that distinguish Icelandic Christmas. You can also read about what Icelanders enjoy to eat over the holidays and find out about operating hours and public transportation. Icelanders must ensure that their homes are clean, that the Christmas decorations have been removed, and that the tree is no longer in the living room. On this night, there are also bonfires to bid farewell to the holiday season.

Those who prefer the darker side of the holiday season have had it pretty good recently, thanks to Krampus's increasing popularity. The horned and hoofed Germanic monster, formerly a mythological character on the outside of Christmas history, has gone mainstream in the United States. There are Krampus Parades taking over major city streets, an invasion of items featuring his long-tongued creepiness, and a horror-comedy film starring Adam Scott and Toni Collette about him.

With no less than 13 naughty Yule Lads, or "jólasveinar," who are said to be troll ancestors, Iceland's extensive folklore adds to the mystique and thrill of the Christmas Season. They dwell in the mountains with their horrible ogress mother Gryla and her massive black cat, which eats all the children who do not receive new Christmas outfits.

Instead of bringing gifts, the Yule Lads sneak into town during the 13 days before Christmas to cause mayhem as Icelandic families prepare for the holiday season. 'Window Peeper,' 'Bowl Licker,' 'Door Slammer,' and their ten brothers perform exactly what their names suggest during this period.

I imagine the Yule cat looking like a huge black Maine Coon. I know it's supposed to be a Norwegian Forest cat, but have you seen Maine Coons?
