Using file IDs makes perfect sense. Files and directories can be moved, copied, and renamed while they're still open. It offers a lot more flexibility.

Apple's printers were very, very successful. The LaserWriter basically launched the entire desktop publishing industry. Every school in the US had computer labs full of Apple ImageWriter dot matrix printers.

Some of the interface features here are reminiscent of the Commodore Amiga’s Workbench interface. For example, the tidy up icons and leave out / put away function.

The Amiga was released only about a year after the Macintosh, but had been in development for a number of years by then. You can clearly see influences from both the Lisa and the Macintosh. Rather than use a ‘desktop’ metaphor, the Amiga used a ‘workbench’ metaphor, with Tools, Projects and Drawers, rather than Apps, Documents and Folders. I wonder if they were concerned about a lawsuit from Apple ;-)

Apple are so far ahead of the curve that they invented the Y2K bug five years early ;-)

4:13 pro tip: the Apple command key is the same as the Windows key on modern keyboards.
