Long Island – Less than an hour’s drive from NYC, find the first of the island’s much-loved beaches. From there, follow us through the coolest parts of the area.

A #LongIsland #vacation sends you eastward from the New York boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens to the bluffs of Montauk Point. A short train ride from Manhattan is Long Beach, which for many is where Long Island begins. Visit Fire Island Lighthouse, which for generations of immigrants was their first glimpse of America. It was on Long Island’s northern shores where the mansions were built that would inspire F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic, The Great Gatsby.

#Visit the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Hempstead and continue your flight into the past at the American Airpower Museum. #Explore the pioneer settlement of Southampton Village and nearby Sag Harbor, a historic whaling port immortalized in Moby Dick. America’s first president, George Washington, commissioned Montauk Lighthouse on Long Island’s easternmost point. Climb to the top to take in the sweeping views of this place that has played center stage in some of America’s greatest stories.

I grew up on Long Island and I currently live in Cape Cod. There are so many similarities. The beaches along the Atlantic Coastline, the salt marshes, the flora and fauna are very similar in both Long Island and Cape Cod. Long Island has more commercial development. I appreciate the education I received in the Three Village School District. I appreciate the safe neighborhoods and the quiet and peaceful times with nature.

Migrated in 1986 at the age of 3 yrs. Old from the Dominican Republic. Grew up and live on the island. This to me is my forever place. Truly fascinating. Been to most places in this short clip and plan on visiting the rest with my 3 kids whom love spending weekends out in Montauk with me. Keep up the good work expedia.

Also: Jones Beach and Nikon theater, Long Island Aquarium, Splish Splash, Roosevelt Field, Shelter Island, Nautical Mile, Blue Point Brewery, Brookhaven National Lab... missed a lot of important places but all in all great video
