Man, that's something. He gave his last full measure of devotion to country.

By his actions at Gettysburg alone, Chamberlain is one of the genuine heroes of the American Civil War. The poetic letters written by officers and men of the Civil War always amaze me with their tender expressions of love, faith, and duty.

He lived with this recurring wound opening periodically and suffering it more bravely than any man ....his marriage suffered for it ...and his life as many veterans of that time was never the same even though he accomplished more after the war he never seemed as whole as he portrayed himself .

Truly an interesting and amazing man... (Also portrayed so amazingly by Jeff Daniels in Gettysburg and the sequel)

I live in Bangor Maine, Brewer is right across the Penobscot River. After you cross over the main Bridge there's a giant statue of Joshua Chamberlain and a plaque about what went down on the battlefield of Gettysburg but it lacks a separate plaque with this same thing you read. this was awesome, moving, heart breaking and a whole new level of respect for another American. Good video.

Honorable mention to Strong Vincent. Due to his orders, Chamberlin was put in the right place at the right time.

An excellent video. I enjoy seeing the war through soldiers eyes. His faith assured him where he would go so death held no fear for him

Thanks, Doc. Chamberlain as been an interest of mine since I encountered the events on Little Round Top in an Army leadership manual. Your skill at bringing out the humanity of warriors makes them more real to me.

Thanks for posting. Chamberlain had such eloquence in his letters. Not covered in this video, but his writings describing the Battle of Fredericksburg are one of the most terrifyingly surreal personal accounts of war that I have ever read. It sends chills up your spine.

Is there a way to escape Death⁉️ after volunteering to ONE of the deadliest WARs mankind have ever seen… After all he wasn’t even a Westpointer‼️
He was ONE lucky guy, that ascended to the Rank of Maj. General. He saved the the battle of Gettysburg with the 20th Maine.

In great deeds something abides. On great fields something stays. Forms change and pass; bodies disappear; But spirits linger, to consecrate ground for the vision-place of souls. And reverent men and women from afar, and generations that know us not and that we know not of, heart-drawn to see where and by whom great things were suffered and done for them, shall come to this deathless field, to ponder and dream; And lo! the shadow of a mighty presence shall wrap them in its bosom, And the power of the vision pass into their souls.”This is the great reward of service, To live, far out and on, in the life of others; General Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain 20th Maine Infantry Marker Dedication Speech, October 3, 1886

Soldiers both North and South were unashamed of their faith. Oh that we as a Nation could walk that path again.

You can really see Chamberlain’s background in rhetoric still stands out in his writing even considering the comparatively more flowery language common of the day. It’s a shame his commitment to military service and multiple brushes with death put a strain on his marriage, which got pretty rocky in the later years even after retirement. All great men and women are still human after all.
