I hope i don't leave any detail out, so please be patient reading this:
Mr. Farrakhan is wrong, he's as far from islam as can be, his belief is so far from the core faith of Islam that he and his predecessors created a parallel religion.
The Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him said:
«عليكم بسنتي وسنة الخلفاء الراشدين المهديين من بعدي»
Which translates to: "So hold fast to my Sunnah and the examples of the Rightly- Guided Caliphs who will come after me."
[Abu Dawud and At- Tirmidhi, who categorized it as Hadith Hasan Sahih].
Hadith Hasan Sahih in arabic means: This saying has been deemed authentic by the clerics and jurists, scholars of holy scriptures and prophet's heritage.
Sunna in arabic means "Habitual Practice", the religiouse definition is "The Prophet Muhammad's (Peace be upon him) sayings, doings, approvals and sanctions."
In arabic the term "Sunni" serves to distinguish the followers of the Prophet's Sunna from those who stray from it and misguide people into a new faith that tarnishes the true way of Islam (Like Mr. Farrakhan himself).
Now, what kind of prophet Muhammad (PBUH) would be if he does not urge his followers to -actually- follow his steps?! A prophet is supposed to call for an Ideal faith and urge people to it.
So saying that the prophet didn't say he is sunni, is like saying Jesus peace be upon him never said "i'm a Christian". In times when new directions are created astray from the true faith, categorizing groups and naming them according to their distance from the true faith is needed. Otherwise how would you identify the authentic from the fake?!

What a smart words he has spitted back then. He (peace be upon him) never said he was sunni, nor shia, nor khanafi nor anything else. He was a muslim. Allah has given us 3 names - a muslims, a believers and a slaves of Allah! Don't separate into sects. Muslims should come together under only one name - muslims!
