I once was watching when a guy, a stranger, hit a wild tee shot off of a very tall (60 feet) rock cliff to left of green ... and it ricocheted onto green and into the cup for an ace. But easily the greatest shot in history of golf resulted in a lost ball. I was playing with a close friend, who has to rank as one of the worst golfers ever, he was lying 3 on a par 4 only 100 yds from tee, and faced with a shot that would hopefully just miss a very tall tree 75 yards in front of him, then another 40 yards over a deep gully. TREE WITH ABSO ZERO LIMBS ON EITHER SIDE, and with a diameter no wider than a foot. Before he even stepped up to the ball, he said "Doug, I know what is going to happen. I am going to hit my best shot of day (he had hit NOTHING but ground balls or sculled shots when away from greens), It will take off like a rocket, hit the right side of that tree about 25 feet up, then careen into those woods to right and down that steep embankment ... and be gone." I told him no way, that he probably wouldn't even reach the tree at all. He smugly said, "Just watch." AND THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED!!! The Babe Ruth called shot of golf .... And sure enough, I went to look for the ball, but soon realized it was a lost cause.
