Ideal Type: Max Weber (Fundamentals of Sociology)

Показать описание
It is one of the methods of comparative study given by Max Weber
Called typological analysis in methodology
Definition by Weber : an ideal type is an analytical construct that serves the investigator as a measuring rod to a certain similarities as well as deviations in concrete cases.
“The Ideal typical concept will develop our skill in imputation in research. It is not a description of reality but it aims to give unambiguous means of expression to such a description.”
Weber believed that sociology can be a science
He emphasised on cause-and-effect analysis and comparative method
For this purpose he proposed ideal type method
For example if a person got infected with coronavirus and the other did not
It is always a debate that whether sociology is a science or not
The base of science is known as universalisation therefore unless the subject is not giving universal theory it cannot be called as a science
Rejecting this weber said comparison is the most basic method of scientific investigation in which cause effect or causal analysis is done
He further said social sciences are different from natural sciences and are independent of each other
Ideal type is a tool to investigate social phenomena through comparative method
Sociology according to weber should be a comparative science if it has to be a science
