the fact that nothing happens for the first 30-60 days is genuinely terrifying.

The rabies patient is smiling and laughing just made it heartbreaking and sad because it also represents that quote "If Death smiles at you, You have no choice but to smile back", that wasn't a laughing and smiling of being anxious, he was smiling and laughing because he knows it's his death, R. If you ever see an animal foaming at the mouth do NOT touch it! Rabies is absolutely horrific.

Sadly, i saw a case during my deployment to Africa. I raised a bag of water to the patient and he swatted at me. He was gone 2 days later.

Here in the Philippines there was in the local news just this month of a 13 yo girl who died of rabies. She was bitten by a puppy with rabies 3 months ago but she didn't told her parents about it so no vaccine was given. When she started having the symptoms she immediately told her mother that she might have rabies and she asked her mother if she's going to die. That's when her parents learned she was bitten but it was already too late and she died a few days later. She even made a audio recording before the symptoms worsen saying to her parents not to worry she is now in a better place. The news crew got a video of her when she was taken to the hospital and tied to the bed.

You know it's gonna be very horrible when it theres no hohoho AND when it says in the title. Rabies is scary and horrible, the few people who made it out are lucky to be alive and should bless others.

Rabies is terrifying. It's important to note that even though there are rabies survivors, essentially all of them have been declared brain dead, and only survive because they're in a coma, hooked up to life support in the hospital... And even that's only the result if you manage to evade death initially, which is still incredibly unlikely.

Jeanna Geise is the ONLY survivor documented to recover to a normal life without having had a vaccination, but even she's had an incredibly rough recovery process, and though she's returned to a normal life, it is quite different than from before she got rabies. She's considered a miracle exception to rabies' fatality rate, and doctors still don't know how to replicate that success. They've tried. They've failed, and continue to fail because rabies is horrific and will kill you.

Your best chance of surviving rabies is to never get it at all. Be cautious of all wild animals, especially if they come right up to you, or are easy to catch when they normally wouldn't be (Jeanna caught a bat - her favorite animal - with surprising ease). Be sure children know this especially! Kids love animals. Kids are less likely to be wary of wild animals and stray dogs, especially if they come close - it's just neat and exciting. Kids are the most likely to contract rabies. If a kid gets rabies, they are going to die. Not all animals with rabies are frothing at the mouth - that's their end result. There are multiple stages of rabies, most of which make an animal easy to approach, or likely to approach you first. They can appear calm. They still have rabies. That can still kill you.

Your SECOND best chance of surviving rabies, which is still *not a foolproof method*, is to get vaccinated. Do not wait for symptoms to appear because, at this point, it's too late. Get vaccinated immediately. Your doctor will watch you for a few hours after, just to be sure. Then they will likely have you come back again. And again. And, possibly, again, because they will want to give you reinforcement shots. They're not 100% positive it will work alone, just optimistic, and they will layer those shots on to give you the best chances possible. If you've had pre-exposure vaccinations, you MUST still seek follow-up medical attention - prep extends your safety window and reduces complications, but alone is not enough to ensure your health. If you get medical assistance promptly, and every shot the doctor has you down for (NOT just one), you are near guaranteed to be fine - just don't wait, and don't rely solely on PrEP. They want to make sure your body knows how to kill rabies so that possible contact with rabies you had doesn't have a chance. Do not delay in seeking medical help. Seek follow-up medical assistance even if you've been vaccinated previously.

*It's important to know, rabies can be contracted through more than just a bite!* You can get rabies through an infected animal's bodily fluid. Any bodily fluid. If it manages to get into any little scrape or cut - or indeed if they create that puncture themselves with a bite or scratch - you can contract rabies. If you're handling an animal who seems docile and they drool on you, and that drool gets into a papercut you forgot about, you're in trouble.

Basically, don't handle wild animals, and employ great caution if you must. Your backyard squirrels are probably fine, but be especially cautious of wild raccoons, skunks, foxes, and bats. If your area has a large population of stray dogs (the biggest rabies carrier worldwide), be extra cautious of them as well. Bats are the most common cause of humans getting rabies (in the USA). Bats are great animals and I love them, but if you have one in your house, leave it well alone and call animal control. Animals beyond these can have rabies, and you should always be cautious, but these animals are most likely to be carrying it.

Rabies will kill you.

My grandma was bitten by a dog contracted rabies and survived, she lived a long life, she passed at 87 years old. Doctors told her it was a miracle.

The only reason he doesn't say "Rabbies have 100% death rate" is because 2 people in the entire world survived by VERY weird odds. That to me is still 100%

Watching this video brought back painful memories of my grandma, who passed away from rabies two years ago. Seeing her suffer from thirst and hunger was heartbreaking, and feeling helpless as we watched her slip away was one of the hardest experiences of my life. It's a tragedy that rabies took her from us. 😢😢😢

So sad too. To see a human being, and know that there is nothing to be done. As an RN, it is horrific to see such.... and he's quite possibly already dead by this time.
