Today, we continue our fascinating Journey through Napoleon's Last Campaign. And, we are getting towards the climax of this most intriguing engagement - The Battle of Waterloo. Recall, that in the first part of this Special Series, we set the stage for this conflict, and witnessed the grand opening of this sequence, with Napoleon's invasion into Belgium (pls click the link below to watch this first episode):

Our Second Part of this Series (Episode 10) was dedicated to Battles of Quatre Bras and Ligny (pls click the link below to watch this first episode):

Our Third Part of this Special Episode (#11) was focused on the pre-battle planning for all three sides (French, Prussian, & Anglo-Dutch armies), including tactical, strategic, and logistical considerations.

Over the next two episodes, we will devote our time to the pinnacle of Military Science - The "Actual" Battle of Waterloo. This time, we will focus on the events of the morning of that fatal day of June18th of 1815, the engagement, which put an end to the Napoleonic Wars - the battle of La Belle Alliance, also known as Battle of Mont-Saint-Jean, or its more well-known British name, The Battle of Waterloo.

We well conclude this special series by considering events occurring in the afternoon of that day. Thank you so much, and I hope you will enjoy this Specials Series!

Sincerely,
Emilia

I was today years old when I first saw somebody work Snoop Dogg into a video about the Napoleonic Wars. Laughter. Well done again, and I look forward to the conclusion of this series.

Well done Emilia....very accurate information as always!
Here is an interesting story about Napoleon's Polish Lancers who annihilated the Scot's Greys at the early stages of the battle of Waterloo.
These guys were considered a part of the "Old Guard" and equal status as the "Grenadiers a Cheval de la Garde"....(together they formed the old guard heavy cavalry).
They shined during the Russian campaign in 1812 where they inflicted tremendous casualties to the famous Cossacks in a very clever and funny way! There was another cavalry regiment, the 'Dutch lancers" (also a cavalry unit of the imperial guard) who wore exactly the same uniforms as the Polish lancers with the only difference being the color of their vest which was red (the Polish lancers wore blue vests).
These Dutch Lancers were not experienced, they were afraid of the Cossacks, constantly avoiding them in battle! The Cossacks naturally considered them "easy prey" and called them with arrogance "red they were eagerly seeking for these Dutch Lancers to attack them and capture them alive!!!!
What the Polish Lancers did was simply replaced their blue vests with red ones so that from a distance they look like "Dutch Lancers" and simply waited for the Cossacks to spot them and attack literally as living bait! When the Cossacks attacked the Polish Lancers the latter easily defeated them for being much more capable and efficient in close combat than the Cossacks who after all were light cavalry depending their success on surprise attacks not in combat in close columns. This brilliant plan saved the real Dutch lancers because the Cossacks stopped attacking them out of fear that they will have to face the Polish

Laughed and learned! “Slightly loserly brother” :) Love the Snape cameo. I also appreciate the details on the artillery and Shrapnel. Never too old to learn something new. Another great episode! Congratulations Emilia.

I like the shorter format. I'm glad I subscribed so it landed on my You Tube home page. Still haven't had a chance to check out all your videos. Plan on doing so over the holiday weekend. Happy New Year!

Marshal Ney believed he was watching the Allies withdraw and then started his large cavalry attack.
At the same time, Blücher, whose troops were already approaching Plancenoit, observed the same thing, namely how the Allied soldiers were retreating.
Ney and Blücher both thought Wellington was retreating there, although Wellington only brought his troops to safety behind the hill.
While Ney was attacking, Blücher immediately had 16 cannons positioned to beshoot the French lines, mainly to make himself heard and to announce the arrival of the Prussians for the French and for the Allied troops.
It was a form of psychological warfare with an immediate effect on the morale of the French and the Allies, and it hit the French worse because Napoleon lied to his soldiers beforehand by announcing that the troops marching from the east were those 30, 000 soldiers under Grouchy who are now arriving as reinforcements.
Since Blücher recognized the distressed situation of Wellington, he did not wait until the Bülow corps was complete arrives on the battlefield, but sent the infantry to battle at Plancenoit as soon as they arrived, and forced Napoleon to counter more and more of his reserves, including large parts of his old guard to send against the Prussians, which he then lacked to win against Wellington ...

A detail before: On June 17th, Wellington asked Blücher for the support of 1-2 Prussian corps for the 18th as a precondition to start the fight at Waterloo.
Blücher promised him this, and otherwise also mentioned that he would fight on June 19 against Napoleon alone.
Blücher and Gneisenau fought often enough directly against Napoleon and one can assume that they knew what they were doing...

Private Edward Macready of the British 30th foot Regiment of the line describes the last charge of the French Imperial Guard at Waterloo....

" It was 7 o' clock and our front had sustained three attacks from fresh troops, when the Imperial Guard were seen ascending our position in as correct order as at a review.
As they rose step by step before us, and crossed the ridge, their red epaulettes and cross-belts put on over their blue great-coats, gave them a gigantic appearance, which was increased by their high hairy caps and long red feathers, which waved with the nod of their hands as they kept time to a drum in the center of their column.
"Now for a clawing"....I muttered, and I confess when I saw the imposing advance of these men, and thought of the character they had gained, I looked for nothing but a bayonet in my body, and I half breathed a confident sort of wish that it might not touch my vitals!!!...."
