10 Club Legends Who FAILED On Their Return!

For today’s top ten, we’re bringing you ten club legends who returned to manage these sides later in their careers, only to fail whilst in charge. In a list inspired by Frank Lampard’s woes at Chelsea, we kick off with Marco van Basten, who missed out on Champions League qualification with Ajax, and Pippo Inzaghi took the reins at AC Milan two years after retirement, only to lead them to their worst position in a generation. There’s a visit to North London, where Ossie Ardiles abandoned the concept of a defence at Tottenham Hotspur, whilst former Arsenal legend Thierry Henry failed at Monaco - the club he made his debut for. Stuart Pearce spent a lot of money at Nottingham Forest in the Championship but lasted just six months, whilst Premier League winner Henning Berg couldn’t take Blackburn back to the top tier, spending less than two months at the helm. Alan Pardew gets a mention for underwhelming at Crystal Palace - although we will always have that FA Cup Final dance to remember him by - and there’s two visits to Newcastle. First, Kevin Keegan was forced out by ownership after dodgy transfer dealings, and Tyneside’s favourite son, Alan Shearer, oversaw the Magpies’ first relegation from the Premier League. This is a good list for those who like schadenfraude - enjoy!

Lampard is still a legend for Chelsea and that status won’t ever change.

This is one of the reasons why I do not want Gerrard to return to Liverpool earlier. I hope he does not rush things and enjoy his managerial career by managing more teams in UK and abroad before returning to Liverpool so he can gain more skills and experiences.

Van Basten’s Netherlands Team in Euro08 played the most entertaining International football in the last 20years.

Kevin Keegan is incredibly harsh, poor guy had to work under Mike Ashley, multiple false promises and even headed to court for unfair dismissal

Danny Wilson at Barnsley, came in as a player/manager and guided us to the premiership in 1996/7 for the first time in our history. Came back in 2014, saw us relegated to league 1 and was sacked by January i think

Putting Lampard here is a harsh one for a man who came and revolutionized the whole squad with youth players with no experience and developed them into top players which in turn helped the club save a lot of money in transfer fees and got into top 4 and into a fa cup final with all the obstacles he had to this ppl have to remember that he will never be a failure at chelsea and his reputation will remain intact no matter what

Sacking Lampard for Tuchel was a brilliant move.

As an Ajax supporter since the late 90's, I can say that every word in Van Basten's inclusion was unfortunately 100% spot on.

How can Keegan be classed as a failure if none of what happened was his fault and he didn’t actually fail?

There’s a stat that shows chelsea were on the same amount on points from games played this season compared to last, yeah with the signings we should have been doing better but the players lampard didn’t even want weren’t performing so it wasn’t his fault
