As a I kid I never found this a problem because the episode had the best punchline at the end. Patchy’s reaction is supposed to represent how the audience would feel after seeing that. “That’s it? That’s the lost episode?!” Will be forever engrained into my brain.

SpongeBob didn't set the stage for internet humor, it merely adopted it.
You have to remember this show was developed in the mid to late '90s, the creators of the show were around when the internet first came out and were the ones who created internet humor.
SpongeBob was just one of the first cartoons to take that and apply it to a space that wasn't the internet, and the internet in return made SpongeBob the most memeable show to exist, next to The Simpsons.
